Where are you working?
A relatively small software development and consulting company in Carlsbad, California called InterKnowlogy. The official description of our company is that we are a global technology leader that specializes in the design, implementation, and delivery of innovative solutions leveraging both current and emerging Microsoft technologies.
What is your title?
I am an Associate Software Engineer.
How did project based learning prepare you for the role you are in today?
It was absolutely crucial. I took several Computer Science classes in high school and college prior to attending Neumont, and while they helped me gain a basic understanding of Computer Science, I looked ahead to see what was in store for me and I wasn't happy with it. There was a very minimal focus on project-based learning, and I knew that I wasn't going to be able to focus on building large-scale business software. Without Neumont's unique approach to teaching software development, I would not be able to jump into a professional, team-based work environment and adapt as quickly as I did. I was literally able to push out my first professional software project within the first 6 weeks of employment.
How does what you learned at Neumont compare with what you are seeing with your colleagues education?
Honestly, I have friends and colleagues that have done just fine for themselves, graduating with CS degrees from universities that don't focus at all on project-based learning. The thing is, that's what they wanted to do. My friends weren't interested in building enterprise solutions. They weren't interested in software architecture. Neumont is absolutely perfect for the type of person that is looking for that kind of unique education, especially the fact that you not only get all the theory you need, but you are also gaining valuable project experience while you learn. My resume upon graduation was leaps and bounds beyond what I've seen typical college graduates in Computer Science have, and that gives you a huge advantage upon graduation.
Anything else you would want to tell a high school student who is considering staying at home to go to a local school rather than coming to Neumont?
Neumont is perfect if you are the type of person that is willing to work hard and adapt quickly to the kind of fast-paced and challenging environment that exists in the industry. I took a huge chance moving away from home to attend a small, little-known university in a city I'd never been to, but I wholeheartedly believe that it was the best decision I've ever made. The education that Neumont provides in the field of software development is top-notch, and well worth it when you receive that diploma.
