Name of Class: MTM355 Digital Design
As an integral component to our Electronic Media, Design, & Entertainment courses students create design projects that mirror real-world design requirements. These projects increase our student's ability to creatively design within the digital domain.
Major topics covered include:
- Successful digital design and use of stereotypical imagery
- Color and color accuracy in the digital world
- Creative use of shapes and space using symmetric and asymmetric layout techniques
- Professional production methods to increase workflow, and large file management techniques
- Theoretical and applied typography
Contributing Students:
Jennifer Rumbaugh, Edward Spotten, Don Livingston, Jared Anderson, Vyrak Bunleang, Keith Davis, Matthew Farver, Zack Frank, Gray Griswold, Jared Maxwell, Geoffrey Setjo, Jason Snyder, Michael Weinand, Alex Wong
Project Description:
Create a six color design for Bluehouse Ski company t-shirt competition. Submissions are based on a theme provided on the company website and the designs are judged and voted on by site members. The winner of the completion receives royalties on shirt sales and discounts on company products.
"This project is a great opportunity for students to create a design from concept to camera ready art, in a time limited environment with a theme provided by the client. This turned out to be a great real world problem solving environment, in which the students were able to successfully incorporate the design principles and techniques discussed in class" John Kilbourn, Digital Design Program Director, Neumont Faculty
Technologies Used:
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe Illustrator
- Adobe Fireworks
Assignment Requirements:
- Good sense of design, particularly for a themed t-shirt, in this case the theme was "The Grind"
- Good use of color, including the choice of color for the shirt as part of the design.
- Creative use of shape, particularly with the limitation of spot color restriction
What students learned: The students learned how to create a design from concept to finished art in a short period of time. They also developed an understanding of the importance of good research, concept work, and developed the ability to create a design that will be relevant and appealing to the audience for whom it was intended.
